Menindee is one of the four major communities of the Central Darling Shire. It is historically known as the marshalling location from where Burke and Wills set off on their ill-fated journey to the North. Maidens Hotel, which still stands today, albeit seriously damaged in a fire during the 1990s and rebuilt, actually had both Burke and Wills as guests during their preparations.

The Menindee Lakes Scheme, which was built during the 1960s, has ensured (to a major degree) secure water for town consumption (including Broken Hill), horticulture and recreation. It also ensures downstream flows in the Murray Darling River System into South Australia.

Today, the township is surrounded by large and small horticultural properties producing table and wine grapes, stone fruits, citrus and vegetables. South of Menindee, Lake Tandou is the home of a large irrigated broadacre farming operation producing cereal crops and premium class cotton.
